about

It has been over a year since Dylan Peggin had released his debut album and now he is back with his second musical statement to the world.

The album starts off in familiar territory with the title track "A Foot in the Door." It includes all of the elements that one would come to expect in a Dylan Peggin song; it features intricate acoustic guitar, a retro sounding organ and an upbeat piano chord progression. The album then kicks into extreme high gear with the in-your-face rocker "Hypnotize." This track is reminiscent in the style of Led Zeppelin and showcases the more heavier side of Dylan, which has rarely been shown until now. The next track "Mend" is an upbeat ballad which features glorious background vocals and a soothing guitar solo. The album is brought down a notch with the acoustic guitar instrumental "Seasons of Change." It comprises of several acoustic bits tied together with sound effects to represent the relative 'season' that the bits represent. The album goes into a more metaphysical feeling with the song "Hideaway (Darker Side of Town)." It features a tribal drum pattern, droning bass lines and a choir. The next track is a more darker sounding one called "Cold Heart Deceiver." The organ work delivers a very minor and moody feeling and a rip-roaring guitar solo from Josh Fordham is delivered. The album gets more upbeat with the reflective "Autumnal Equinox" which tells a story of two lovers that, unknown to the listener, falls on the first day of Fall. The next song "Brilliant Disguise" is Dylan's homage to one of his main musical influences, Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd. The album reaches its climactic peak with "Read Between The Lines," a song about people missing out on the true meaning of a situation without reading between the bold headlines. The album is rounded off with the stripped back acoustic number "Trailing Back" which brings the album together to a strong end. The sound of footsteps and a door closing on the title track are contrasted with the door opening and more footsteps at the end of "Trailing Back", which brings this album full circle into a cohesive whole.

If Dylan's first album was a bunt, 'A Foot in the Door' is a home run. The contrast in musical styles throughout the album is what gives this album its character and is consumable for anyone who appreciates the idealism of modern day singer/songwriters mixed with hints of rock and folk.
